Kinetic Sculpture Race

Celebrate the beginning of May with a viewing of the East Coast Kinetic Sculpture Race. Baltimore's American Visionary Arts Museum sponsors the race, which features human-powered sculptural vehicles that can function on land and in the water. Race participants pedal and paddle their kinetic sculptures over 15 miles of terrain, which include the streets of Baltimore's Inner Harbor district and the Chesapeake Bay. The teams compete for several honors, including the Art Award, given to the team with the most fully realized an executed theme, the Golden Flipper, given to the team with the most interesting entry into the water and the Golden Dinosaur, awarded to the team whose vehicle breaks down either first, or most often. Spectators are encouraged to dress up in goofy attire and cheer on the teams as they race past.
