Madison, Connecticut, is located on the state's shoreline of the Long Island Sound, and its beach area, fishing pier and campsites make it a most popular destination for those people seeking a breather from life in the city. The town was settled in 1641, and, according to the town's website, more than 18,600 people live there. Because of its popularity, you'll have a number of restaurant choices.

Dolly Madison Inn & Restaurant

You can stay at the Dolly Madison Inn & Restaurant, or simply make reservations for dinner. Either way, you'll find that it melds the essence of the sea and the flavors of the country, and has a spectacular view of the Long Island Sound. The menu has about 75 dishes including appetizers like escargot and clams on the half shell. Entrees include seafood Wellington, a combination of lobster, shrimp, crabmeat, scallops and whitefish baked in a puff pastry shell served on a bed of lobster sauce and finished with fresh mushrooms with rice, and veal Florentine, lightly pan-sauteed veal in lemon and wine and served on fresh seasoned spinach, with rice.

Cafe Allegre

If romance is on your mind and you are looking for an excellent Italian restaurant, look no further than Cafe Allegre. This restaurant is in a church that has been fully remodeled with textured walls, huge murals and handwoven rugs throughout. Order one of several appetizers such as smoked salmon Carpaccio, thinly sliced smoked salmon served over crostini with capers and finely diced onions, or a sampler of oysters, clams and shrimp on ice. For an entree, the menu includes dishes like Chicken Sorrentina, boneless breast of chicken topped with prosciutto and mozzarella served in a light tomato sauce with peas, or grilled chateaubriand of beef that's sliced and served with a bordelaise sauce.
