Marin County, California, is just across the Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. The area is known for its natural beauty and resources--redwood forests, mountain trails, Point Reyes National Seashore and Stinson Beach are just a few. Close to San Franciso, Marin County offers both outdoors adventures and quiet, romantic getaways.

Steep Ravine Environmental Campground

Located along the Pacific Coast within Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Steep Ravine Environmental Campground features nine rustic camping cabins, each with sleeping platforms, wood stoves, picnic table and barbeque. There is no electricity or running water in the cabins, but water faucets and primitive toilet facilities are nearby. If you prefer to bring a tent, seven campsites are available. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table and food storage. No more than five people per cabin or campsite site are permitted, and no pets. Reservations can be made 10 days to seven months in advance. Rates as of March 2010 are $100 per night for a cabin; $25 per night for a campsite.

The Inn Above the Tide

From each of the 29 rooms and suites of the Inn Above the Tide, guests are treated to spectacular, panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and beyond. The inn is a short drive from redwood forests and coastal attractions. Rooms have private teak decks, imported linens and toiletries, and plush robes and slippers. Guests are treated to turn-down service and optional in-room dining and massage. Rooms vary from doubles, kings and suites, to the expansive penthouse. Rates, as of March 2010, range from $305 to $1025 per night.

Bleu Bay Beach Cottage

The Bleu Bay Cottage, along the shore of picturesque Tomales Bay, has a large deck overlooking the water, a perfect spot from which to watch the sunset, cast a line or launch a kayak. The cottage sleeps six, with a second-floor queen bedroom, queen-size pull-out sofa in the living room, and a fold-out double sofa in the sun room. A fully applianced kitchen is provided, along with a TV with video/DVD capabilities. There is no television reception. Week-end rates, as of March 2010, are $250 per night on the weekends and $200 per week night.

The Gables Inn Bed and Breakfast

The Gables Inn features 18 rooms, some with bay views, king beds, fireplaces and spa tubs. Each morning, guests are served a breakfast buffet of fresh fruit, grains and yogurt. Between 5 and 7p.m., complimentary wine and cheese is served by the fireplace in the inn's main room. Morning paper, concierge service, coffee and tea (available all day), cable television and video library are included. Rates as of March 2010, range from $195 to $495 per night.
