The State of West Virginia remains largely undeveloped with over 75 percent of its land covered by forests. This creates an adventurous landscape for outdoor enthusiasts to hike the Appalachian Mountains, boat down quiet rivers and explore the great outdoors. The three primary airports in West Virginia, as distinguished by the FAA, are located in Charleston, Huntington and Lewisburg.

Yeager Airport

Locate a few miles outside Charleston, Yeager Airport hosts six major airlines with nonstop flights to 10 U.S. cities. The airport offers both short-term and long-term parking, hotel shuttle pickup and several rental car companies.

During winter months, those who fly into Yeager will find several popular ski resorts within an hour's drive, including Snowshoe Mountain and Winter Place. When the weather is warmer, consider white water rafting on one of Charleston's rivers or taking a hike through the foliage-rich mountains in the fall.

Greenbrier Valley Airport

Located in Lewisburg, West Virginia along the southern border of the Monongahela National Forest, the Greenbrier Airports hosts Continental Airlines as its sole aircraft company. Considerably closer to ski resorts than Charleston, the Greenbrier Valley Airport makes for an easy drive to area resorts and national forests, and the area offers a calmer environment than busy Charleston. In addition to ski resorts, Greenbrier Valley Airport is close to popular caverns and caves, or you may wish to skip the tourist attractions of the caverns and explore the area forests and waterfalls on your own. With southeastern West Virginia barely inhabited and almost fully undeveloped, you never know what you will find. For travelers with cars, the Jefferson National Forest, located across the Virginia border, is about an hour's drive down interstate 77.

Tri-State Airport

Tri-State Airport in Huntington, West Virginia is named for its proximity to West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Located on the border of all three states, the airport officially resides in Huntington. Three airlines make flights to and from Tri-State Airport. Allegiant Air makes nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Delta uses the airport for connecting flights to Cincinnati, and U.S. Airways connects to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Located along the Ohio River, Huntington offers plenty of opportunities for kayakers and boaters. Although far from the eastern mountains, state parks near Huntington offer places to hike, camp and bird watch. In town, the Harris Riverfront State Park features walking trails alongside the Ohio River and places to fish and launch boats. Although relatively urban for a park, the area provides a tranquil escape from noisier city locations.
