If you are headed to the scenic mountains of upstate South Carolina, you can relax at a cabin retreat in the woods or by the lake shore. Whether you plan to hike, fish, bird-watch or just take in nature's beauty, there are plenty of affordable rental cabins that will bring you and your family closer to nature and provide you with the rustic and down-to-earth experience of mountain life.

Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area

Overlooking Lake Keowee and with spectacular views of the Blue Ridge, this mountain cabin comes completely furnished and is supplied with fresh linens, cooking and eating utensils, an ice maker, washer and dryer, toaster, coffee maker and is heated and air-conditioned. Guests are invited to enjoy free satellite television and relax by the cabin's two wood-burning fireplaces. There is a private boat dock, and the three-bedroom cabin can accommodate up to 10 guests. Nightly rates (as of early 2010) are between $115 to $144 during peak season, and cheaper rates are available for off-season stays. Pets are not welcome at this facility but are allowed in the park, as long as they are kept leashed at all times. The nearest town, hospital, restaurant and grocery store is 14 miles away.

Oconee State Park

You can enjoy bass fishing, nature hiking, bird and animal-watching and relaxation in these cozy and well-kept cabins. Each of the 19 completely furnished available units include include a fireplace and are heated, air-conditioned, and supplied with linens, basic cooking and eating utensils, coffee maker and microwave. Choose a secluded woods environment or one with a lake-view. One cabin is handicap accessible. Sorry, no pets are allowed in the cabin area, although they are welcome in the park as long as they are kept on a six-foot leash. The nearest grocery store is 11 miles away, and there is a hospital 16 miles from the park. A pay phone is available on the premises for guest use. One bedroom cabins rent for $60 to $75 a night during peak season and are cheaper during off-peak months. Two bed-room cabins will sleep up to six adults and are available for $65 to $94 a night during peak season, with discounted rates during off-season months. For groups of up to 16 people, The Barrack offers two bathrooms, kitchen, bed and bath linens, cooking and eating utensils, automatic coffee maker, and a window AC unit for only $128 to $150 a night and is available for year-round rentals.

Gaze at the scenic vistas of Table Rock State Park, swim in the two lakes and hike the 80 mile long Foothills Trail through the Blue Ridge Escarpment wilderness before settling down in your rustic and fully equipped cabin. Each unit is completely furnished, heated, air-conditioned, and offers fresh bath and bed linens, cooking and eating utensils, automatic coffee make and a microwave. You can relax and take in the mountain view from your own screened porch, or snuggle up by the fireplace with a good book. Cabins with one, two or three bedrooms are available for just $80 to $135 a night during peak season, with discounted rates during off-season months. Pets are not permitted in the cabin area, but they are welcome throughout the park, as long as they are kept on a six-foot leash.
