Fishing Lodges on the Yukon River in Alaska

The Yukon River is considered by some as one of the great rivers of the world, on par with the Amazon, Nile and St. Lawrence. The word Yukon means "great river" in the native language of Gwich'in. The Yukon is unique in that it flows north. The river is fished by commercial, sport and subsistence anglers. If you are planning a trip to Alaska to do some fishing, there are several lodges and fishing camps along the banks of the Yukon. A valid Alaska fishing licenses is required and can be purchased in Fairbanks or online through the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's website.

The Yukon River Lodge is situated in the Kokrines Hills, along the north bank of the Yukon River. The lodge is accessed via the river or by bush plane. Guests can fish for king salmon during the run, which is mid-July through September. The lodge owners and hosts are skilled anglers and are ready to assist guests with flies, gear, tackle and where to fish. Meals are family style. Wolves, moose, grizzly bears and eagles can be spotted at the lodge. Make arrangements for flights or boat services out of Fairbanks, Alaska. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and lots of mosquitoes.

The Anvik River Lodge is in a remote location on the Anvik River, a tributary of the Yukon River. Flights to the lodge depart from Fairbanks. The Anvik is the only fishing lodge on the tributary; the nearest village is 70 miles away. You will have the entire section of the river to yourself to fish for king, pink and chum salmon during their annual runs. July through September is prime time for kings. Staff at the lodge are expert fishermen and can assist guests with where to fish, tackle and fly choices, and can help with filleting, bagging and shipping your catch. The lodge has private rooms and bathrooms. Meals are served family style. Be prepared for lots of mosquitoes. Also be bear aware when fishing; the region has lots of grizzlies.

Princess Fairbanks Lodge

Princess Fairbanks Lodge is considered one of the top hotels and lodges in Fairbanks. The hotel offers a full range of services and amenities, such as free Wi-Fi, cable TV, robes and valet services. The tour desk can arrange fishing trips on the Yukon River, and offers fishing packages to guests. The lodge is along the banks of the Yukon River on the outskirts of the city. You can fish along the river banks in front of the lodge, or go out on a river boat with a guide or charter service. There are several smokehouses in Fairbanks that will fillet, smoke and ship your catch to any address. Moose and fox are frequently seen along the river banks in front of the lodge.
