Montana is world-renowned for its pristine mountains and wild rivers. People have been visiting Montana mountainous areas for decades to hike along the Lewis and Clark Trail, hunt in the backcountry, raft on the Missouri River and experience life on a ranch. While there are many bed and breakfasts and inns in the state, there is a rising class of resorts that will take your mountain vacation to a different level.

St. Mary's Resort and Lodge

Located on the eastern side of Glacier National Park lies St. Mary's Resort and Lodge. It has a range of accommodations, from isolated cabins to tipis with no connected electricity. Its restaurants have been recognized in the New York Times, U.S. News and World Report and Travel and Leisure Magazine. St. Mary's Resort and Lodge has many outdoor activities, including rafting, fishing, boating, ATV tours and horseback riding. St. Mary's has gift stores and a gas station. Prices range from $119 to $399 per night as of March 2010. The resort is open from May to September annually.

East-West Resort

Located near the Wyoming and Idaho borders, East-West Resort has panoramic mountain views. East-West Resort is known for the largest ski area in America, with over 4,000 feet of continuous vertical drop. With different types of luxurious cabins, the resort has many winter and summer activities, including skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing and visiting Yellowstone National Park by snow coach. Summer activities include rodeo, fishing, golfing and hiking. It provides free Wi-Fi, free long-distance calling, a spa and an ice-skating rink. Nearby restaurants have a variety of cuisines. Prices range from $200 to over $3,000 per night as of March 2010.

The Resort at Paws Up

A few miles south of Glacier National Park lies the Resort at Paws Up. You can pick from a variety of lodgings, including tents and cabins. The resort offers exploration classes for kids and a variety of classes for adults, including geocaching, rock climbing, golfing, mountain biking and whitewater rafting. Among the amenities are free s'mores by the fire and camping butlers. Prices range from $665 to $2,900 per night as of March 2010.
