Mountain bikes are a popular choice for many urban bike riders. They have strong frames designed to take punishment and suspension systems that smooth out the ride over potholes, cobblestones or other city obstacles. One problem when using a standard mountain bike in town is the knobby tires they come equipped with. These are effective for mountain trails where you need traction, but their sticky compound formulation and rough ride slow you down on pavement. Changing to a tire designed for use on the roads will make city riding easier and more enjoyable.

Michelin City Tire

Michelin is a leading manufacturer of bike tires. The City Tire is designed to offer low-rolling resistance while maintaining a tread design that sheds water or the occasional patch of mud, so you can commute on these tires during the week and still have fun in the country on gravel or packed dirt trails on the weekend. The tires boast an internal sidewall strip to protect against puncture, and the tread will average over 3,500 miles for the average rider. Reflective strips on the side of the tire provide an extra measure of safety when riding at night.

Panaracer Urban Max

Panaracer's Urban Max road tire is built for extra durability and puncture resistance, with 50 percent more fiber built into the sidewall casings than most tires. The tire sports a hybrid slick design that gives you an aggressive tread for control in wet conditions, while keeping rolling resistance low for easy pedaling and higher speeds.

Kenda Small Block Eight

The Kenda Small Block Eight moutain bike tire isn't a true road slick, but for the rider who wants to hit the city streets as well as the trails, it's an efficient compromise. The knob pattern of the tire is composed of a series of small blocks, tightly spaced, that give effective straight-line speed while still providing a firm grip in the corners and on the climbs.
