Prague, the capital of the modern Czech Republic, has been an important cultural center of Europe for more than a millennium. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Europe. Whether travelers go for the championship skateboarding, ice hockey, marathons or world-class arts, they can start the day with the breakfast of choice in a Prague bistro or café.

Ambiente Pastacaffe

At the Ambiente Pastacaffe, guests can grab a coffee-to-go for 39 Korunas. Or they can sit down for a continental breakfast, scrambled eggs, an omelette or toast with ham and cheese. The eggs are organic, the fruit is seasonal and there are sides of bacon and sausage. For a quick jolt of morning energy, diners might want to try an espresso and a croissant. A small, spare café with modern décor and an emphasis on Italian fare for lunch and dinner, Pastacaffe has two locations in Prague, one on Vodickova and another on Vezenska.

Cafe Louvre

Café Louvre serves up history and celebrity with coffee and the morning paper. Albert Einstein and Franz Kafka were patrons. The coffeehouse has been around since 1902 and takes pride at having been at the center of Czech cultural life for more than a century. Guests can choose smoking or non-smoking, Viennese coffee or cappuccino, homemade pancakes with hot raspberry sauce and sour cream or breakfast beef goulash, the "International Herald Tribune" or "Le Monde," a Czech Breakfast (ham, cheese, boiled egg and apple cake) or a Cowboy Breakfast (bacon, eggs and apple-meringue pie with walnuts)--it's all good. There is a small cover charge for bread and condiments--the charm is on the house.

Bohemia Bagel

Bohemia Bagel is an American-Czech hybrid that caught on quickly and now has five locations around the city. The free coffee refills and Internet service make it a popular hangout but it is the homemade bagels, made fresh throughout the day and preservative-free that draw steady crowds, especially at breakfast. Those with an appetite may try an everything bagel with Philadelphia cream cheese and lox or opt for muffins, huevos rancheros or pigs-in-blankets. Diners can get muesli and yogurt, vegetarian dishes and eggs cooked to order. Bohemia Bagel serves bacon and eggs, burgers and fries and the best bagels in the Czech Republic for homesick tourists and and homegrown Prague fans.
