The eclectic New York City neighborhood known as Greenpoint comprises a small area in the northernmost part of Brooklyn just below Queens. Historically Greenpoint has been a working-class, mostly Polish neighborhood, and today Greenpoint is still home to America's second largest Polish immigrant population after Chicago. You'll find dozens of excellent restaurants in Greenpoint that serve authentic Polish cuisine. Whether you're in the mood for savory pierogies or traditional bigos stew, Greenpoint offers great options to try real Polish cuisine.

Karczma

This newer addition to the Greenpoint Polish restaurant scene opened in 2007 and features rustic Polish farmhouse-style décor, old Polish folk music and servers dressed in traditional garb. Start off with an appetizer of peasant-style lard with bacon and spices served with homemade bread, grilled asparagus wrapped in Polish ham or cheese and potato pierogies. Main dishes include spicy beef goulash with potato pancakes and pickled cucumber, grilled kielbasa with onion and hunter's stew with red wine served with mashed potatoes. Prices are more than reasonable.

Christina's Restaurant

This long-running Polish restaurant has been featured on "Fox 5 News," "NBC Morning News" and the cooking program "Breaking Bread." Krakow native Krystyna Dura opened the restaurant in 1993 and has developed a loyal clientele of local Polish immigrants and lovers of Polish cuisine. Nearly every traditional Polish dish is represented on Christina's extensive menu, including bigos, kielbasa, Bavarian-style pigs' knuckles, pierogies (cheese and potato, beef, cabbage and mushroom, spinach and ricotta) and cheese blintzes. Imported Polish beers Tyskie, Zywiec and Okocim are also available, but be aware that they pack a serious punch compared with most American beers.

Krolewskie Jadlo

Krolewskie Jadlo, the Polish words meaning "king's feast," is the brainchild of Chef Krzysztof Drzewiecki, former cook at Robert DeNiro's trendy Nobu sushi restaurant in Manhattan. Drzewiecki serves up traditional Polish food with a gourmet twist designed to make guests feel like kings of ages past. Dishes like roasted duck legs in apples, trout in yogurt herb sauce, white borscht soup served in a country-style bread bowl and potato pancakes topped with herb cream and smoked salmon certainly are the trick. Krolewskie Jadlo also offers daily specials like chicken rolls stuffed with spinach, walnuts and apple vodka sauce.
