Situated in northwestern Texas, near the border of New Mexico, Lubbock offers many attractions for all types of tourists, from music lovers to nature lovers. Lubbock, which has a population of over 260,000 as of 2007, is also home to Texas Tech University.

Buddy Holly Center

Featuring guitars, clothes and even his famous glasses, the Buddy Holly Center is a museum showcasing Buddy Holly's work. The museum provides interactive exhibits and programs on Texas music and contemporary visual arts, all for an inexpensive admission price. The center also offers a range of educational and outreach programs for people of all ages in the form of workshops and classes. Special events are held at the center, including an annual sock hop. The Buddy Holly Gallery, as well as the Fine Arts Gallery and the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame, can all be rented for special events. Children under age 6 and active-duty military in uniform receive free admission. The center is closed on Mondays.

Lubbock Arboretum

A serene area with walkways throughout, the Lubbock Arboretum features exhibits of the best trees, shrubs and vines that can be grown in the area, as well as a laboratory for studying and testing plants. The arboretum offers workshops and discounts on education courses, as well as access to its natural areas for locals who become members. Proceeds from memberships go to educational programs for schools and restoration of current planting in the arboretum.

Silent Wings Museum

World War II buffs will want to check out Silent Wings Museum, which focuses on preserving the history of the World War II military glider program. The museum collects, documents and exhibits artifacts from the era. Start the tour with a 15-minute program on World War II gliders, then enjoy the exhibits, which include a time line, a hangar and combat galleries. A library for reading about the era is also available. Other features of the Silent Wings Museum include educational tours and scavenger hunts for all ages. Children under age 6 and active-duty military in uniforms receive free admission. The museum is closed Mondays.
