Skiing and snowboarding in North Carolina's Appalachian Mountains are popular activities for residents and visitors. With the highest mountains east of the Rockies and temperatures cold enough for making snow, when hitting the slopes there are a variety of resorts from which to choose.

Sugar Mountain Resort

Sugar Mountain Resort is located approximately 82 miles northeast of Asheville and about a 30-minute drive from Boone. It is North Carolina's largest ski area with 20 slopes and trails spread over 115 skiable areas. The resort features 40 percent novice and intermediate runs and 20 percent expert, including the largest vertical drop in the state at 1,200 feet. Riders can enjoy the Terrain Park, quarter-pipe or railslide. Ski and snowboard rentals and lessons are available and the Base Lodge features restaurants, a sports shop, ticket sales and locker rooms. Tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing are also available in the town of Sugar.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is located approximately 40 minutes drive north of Asheville and five miles from Interstate 26. The resort boasts more than 82 skiable acres, 20 slopes and five chairlifts. There are two ski lodges, a ski and snowboard school, restaurants, a terrain park, snow tubing hill and night skiing.

Beech Mountain Resort

Beech Mountain Resort is located near the Tennessee border approximately 35 minutes away from Boone by car. With a base elevation of 4,675 feet and a peak elevation at 5,506, Beech Mountain Resort is the highest ski area and snowboarding park is the eastern United States. It boasts 95 skiable acres accessible by 10 lifts and a vertical rise of 830 feet. There are two terrain parks, snow tubing, four restaurants, two sports shops, ski and snowboarding lessons and a 7,000 square foot outdoor ice skating rink.
