Sandpoint, Idaho, sits along the 43-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille, overlooking the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities all year. Sandpoint is 80 miles from Spokane, 352 miles from Seattle and 439 miles from Boise. Spokane International Airport provides access to several airlines. Amtrak also makes a stop in the town. There are a few traditional chain hotels, such as Days Inn and Holiday Inn Express. However, most of the lodging facilities in the area are geared toward guests looking for retreat rentals that offer an array of amenities in a peaceful setting.

Dover Bay Waterfront Resort

The Dover Bay Marina Village offers 19 waterfront vacation bungalow rentals and two condo rentals. Located on Lake Pend Oreille, there are 9 miles of walking and biking trails that surround the marina village. Guests receive complimentary access to the Lake Club Fitness Center. The studio and one-bedroom bungalows sleep two to four guests. The two-bedroom bungalows with bunks sleep up to seven guests. Each bungalow has a bathroom, full kitchen, gas fireplace and deck. Activities at the marina include a boat launch, boat rental, water sport rental, cafe and market. Rates start at $142 for a studio rental with two guests, but can run as high as $560 for the two-bedroom bungalow during July and August for six guests, as of 2010.

Best Western Edgewater Resort

The Best Western Edgewater Resort sits on Lake Pend Oreille. The hotel offers 54 guest rooms, all with lake views. Amenities include a fitness center, pool, on-site restaurant, indoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna, room service, wireless Internet, exercise facility, meeting rooms, fishing, ice skating and lounge. Each room has cable TV, a hair dryer, ironing equipment, dataports and complimentary newspaper. Pets are allowed with a $10 fee per pet. Activities within walking distance include an art walk, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, walking and biking paths, jet ski and boat rentals, lake swimming, public boat launch, parasailing and scuba diving. Golf, skiing, horseback riding and Silverwood Theme Park also are nearby. The hotel offers ski packages for Schweitzer Mountain during the winter. Rates range from $79 to $179 in every month except July and August, as of 2010. July and August rates average about $200 a night.

Western Pleasure Guest Ranch

The Western Pleasure Guest Ranch is located on 1,100 acres overlooking the Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges. The resort offers six rooms in a 10,000-square-foot lodge, three hand-hewn log cabins and a secluded vacation home for rent. Horseback riding is one of the key offerings of the ranch. Lessons and hourly and full-day horseback rides are available. The ranch also features winter and summer getaway packages that offer guests an array of other activities as well. Summer activities include hiking, fishing, horseshoes, trap shooting, teepee camping, evening campfires, outdoor hot tub, scavenger hunt, archery range, dinner cruise, golf, basketball and volleyball. Winter activities include snowmobiling, snow shoeing, sleigh rides, spa treatments and skiing at nearby Schweitzer Mountain. Summer rates are $1,450 per person for a week-long reservation or $225 a night for three- to seven-night stays, as of 2010. Children stay at a discounted rate. The rate includes three meals per day, evening entertainment and access to all amenities.
