German Restaurants Near Winchester, Virginia

Several German restaurants are near Winchester, Va. Though none are within the city boundaries, inns and bistros are within a short drive in the tri-state area. Restaurants are located in Leesburg, Va., Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Hagerstown, Md.

Doner Bistro

Thirty miles from Winchester, the Doner Bistro is located in downtown Leesburg. Doner Bistro provides live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. It is also well-known for its wide selection of imported German beer, including Konig Pilsner, Bitburger Pilsner and Köstritzer Black Lager. Available dishes range from Currywurst specials such as beef sausage, white sausage and bratwurst. Doner also serves schnitzel platters, which are breaded veal and fried veal cutlet, all of which are served with pommes, hand-cut potato fries.

The Bavarian Inn

The Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, about a 45-minute drive from Winchester, features a restaurant on the banks of the Potomac River. It offers four dining rooms, available for parties and events. Lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch are served, while more casual dining is available in the Rathskellar pub. Dinner entrees include specialties such as Bavarian sauerbraten, which is beef roast marinated in vinegar and spicy red wine ginger sauce. Wiener schnitzel and jaeger schnitzels, both veal dishes, are served as well as schwweinbraten, a roast pork entrée. Unique dishes such as seared antelope steak, vegetarian lasagna and vegetarian burgers are also available.

Schmankerl Stube

Schmakerl Stube is north of Winchester in Hagerstown, near the Prime Outlets. Created by Charlie Sekula, a native of Bavaria, the "Stube" contains an outdoor garden, or "biergarten," perfect for enjoying an appetizer, a drink or dessert. The Schmaankerl Stube also offers three dining rooms available for large parties, providing a wide array of dishes, including schmankerl wurst teller, which is a sausage platter that contains three types of wursts (debrezinerwurst, knackwurst and weisswurst); and schwäbisches zwiebelfilet, which is beef filet Bavarian style and contains medallions of pork and beef fillets. Most notable are the Wednesday specials such as pork shank Bavarian. These specials are first-come, first-served and available after 6:30 p.m. In addition, new entrée specials are offered each week such as sautéed venison fillet tips with mushrooms and cranberries in a cream sauce and seefahrer kost, which is grilled tournedos of beef fillet topped with seasoned lump crab.
