Scuba diving along Belize's impressive barrier reef, which is the second largest one in the world, is one of the major attractions that brings tourists from around the world. Belize City is a natural diving point for some of these expeditions since it is a coastal city that has some great nearby dive points. The reef is over 180 kilometers long and offers diving spots all the way up and down the Belize coast. Belize City is a short ferry ride to San Pedro, which has many of the best dive resorts in all of Belize.

Portofino Resort

The Portofino Resort is located on Ambergris Caye, the largest island on Belize's Barrier Reef. There are eight beach cabanas along with three treetop suites on stilts, which are on the white sand beaches. Amenities include air conditioning, TV, wireless Internet and a mini-bar. The reef is only 1/2 mile away from the beach. Reef diving, atoll diving and snorkeling all are available. Portofino will be especially attractive to tourists who want to get away for a bit, as this resort is isolated enough that it is only accessible by boat, even from the local town of San Pedro. Portofino's restaurant, Le Bistro, is one of the most respected restaurants in Belize, and there are many different discount packages available online.

Xanadu Island Resort

The Xanadu Island Resort is located a short walk outside San Pedro and offers 19 condominium style suites in addition to lofts, studios and 1-, 2- or 3-bedroom accommodations. Buildings are monolithic domes where the outside is decorated in native thatch and designed with porches to fit into the local tropical climate.

There are many activities In addition to diving, such as kayaking, nature walks, ocean fishing, and cycling. Room amenities include fully equipped kitchens, cable TV, central air, hair dryers, Internet access, safes and large shaded decks.

Victoria House Resort

Victoria House Resort has 42 rooms and suites in addition to beach front villas. Amenities include air conditioning, showers, TV, and queen or king sized beds. Several of the housing options include private covered decks. Aside from being a good staging point for diving and snorkeling around the Belize Barrier Reef, Victoria House Resort also has a private pool, a restaurant, and bar. One of the great draws to Victoria House Resort is their unique offering of helicopter tours over the island and local area.
