Denali Grizzly Bear Cedar Hotel

Denali National Park, located in Interior Alaska, encompasses 1,334,200 acres of national preserve, including Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. The preserve includes forest, tundra and glaciers which provide endless opportunities for adventure. Visitors enjoy backpacking, dog-sledding, snowmobiling, fishing and whitewater rafting. A wide variety of mammals and birds may be seen, including black bears, caribou, moose, gray wolves, waxwings, tundra swans and golden eagles. Denali Grizzly Bear Cedar Hotel is six miles south of the park entrance.

Accommodations

Grizzly Bear Resort includes the Cedar Hotel, private cabins, a campground and a general store. The 74 rooms at the hotel offer two double beds. Amenities include a cable television, hair dryer, coffee maker and alarm clock. The rooms do not have phones; however, a payphone is located at the general store. Handicap accessible rooms are available. The general store offers groceries, a laundry facility and internet access.

River Views

Located on the Nenana River, every room at the Denali Grizzly Bear Cedar Hotel has a private balcony overlooking the river. Large glass doors leading to the balcony provide a clear view of the trees and river. The Nenana River, which begins at the Nenana Glacier in northern Alaska, is one of the most popular whitewater rafting spots in Alaska, according to Alaska.com.

One popular river adventure begins next to the Denali Grizzly Bear Cedar Hotel and campground, at mile post 231 on the George Parks Highway. The section of river next to the hotel is calm and scenic. Guests may rent inflatable kayaks at nearby Denali Outdoor Center.

Dining

The hotel offers a continental breakfast for groups of 14 or more, upon request. Denali Roadhouse Restaurant, located within walking distance of the hotel, serves breakfast and dinner daily. The restaurant offers boxed lunches, which are perfect for taking on daily outings.

Activities

The tour desk at the Denali Grizzly Bear Cedar Hotel helps guests make arrangements for activities such as rafting tours, horseback trail rides and helicopter tours. The hotel provides free transportation to any tour booked through the tour desk. The Cedar Hotel also offers shuttle service to and from the train depot, for a fee.

The Denali Backcountry Adventure is one of the most popular tours the hotel books. The adventure takes guests to Kantishna, a historic mining town.

Season

The Cedar Hotel is open mid-May through mid-September. Rates increase during the peak season, June through August. The hotel is closed during the off season, October through mid-May. When the hotel is closed, the home office, located in Fairbanks, may be contacted for information or reservations.
