Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a 72-mile stretch of islands in the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina. The popular vacation destination is also a protected national resource that has become one of the most visited national parks in the country. Because of its designation as a national seashore, most of the wilderness of the area is protected from development, so it makes for scenic exploration by water. There are companies that offer kayak tours throughout the various ecosystems of Cape Hatteras.

Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School

Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School has been in operation since 1984, and it specializes in eco-tourism throughout the Outer Banks. All of the company's kayak tours begin with a lesson in paddling and safety, as well as an overview of the tour area and route, so both beginner paddlers and seasoned veterans are welcome on the tours. You can choose from among the many tours offered by Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School, from the Alligator River National Wildlife Tour, where you could see black bears, wolf, deer and alligators, to the Full Moon or Sunset tours that lead you through the flat waters of the region at specific times of day. Experienced paddlers can ask for a privately guided tour further off the beaten path.

It offers a variety of kayaks that accommodate one or two people and can be sit-in or sit-on-top models, and the Hatteras Watersports staff offers instructions for all paddlers. If you want to be a little more adventurous, rent one of the ocean kayaks and head for the waves.

You can choose an ecology and natural history tour that will teach you about the ecosystems of Cape Hatteras, a specialized skills instruction that will help develop your padding skills or a pirate tour that will teach you about the storied history of the area and why it is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Choose to explore the lost colony of Roanoke Island or for a romantic experience, try the sunset tour on the Pamlico Sound.
