There are many hand-held GPS receiver models for geocaching. The size of the budget and desired features determine the best GPS for each geocacher. When comparing receivers, common features to consider are the amount of flash memory, SD card slot, preloaded maps, the battery life, touch-screen or keypad, the screen size, water resistance capabilities, and geocaching features. Many newer models allow the user to download .loc and .gpx files directly, or nearly directly, to the GPS receiver. Some will even store cache data such as size, description, difficulty, and recent logs.

Garmin Oregon 400t

The Oregon is a top-of-the-line hand-held GPS receiver with 3-D, color, touch-screen enabled U.S. or European topographic map preloaded, and a worldwide gray-scale map with shaded relief. It has a microSD card slot. This enables the user to purchase additional map areas or data that adds layers and enhances the included maps. With a MapSource microSD card installed, the Oregon provides detailed street maps and turn-by-turn directions. There are many specialized map cards available for trails, equestrian trails, whitewater rafting, and ocean water sports.

The Oregon supports Geocaching.com's GPX files, enabling the user to download cache information directly to the GPS and access the cache information through a touch-screen interface. The Oregon will wirelessly connect to other Oregon, Colorado and Dakota GPS receivers, allowing users to share information such as cache locations, routes, other waypoints or points of interest. After the trip, relive the adventure through Garmin Connect, a website that enables you to download the GPS data and review it using Google Earth, then share your adventures through Facebook and Twitter.

Magellan Triton 1500

The Triton series of GPS receivers are Magellan's next generation of hand-held GPS devices. They are rugged and waterproof. The 1500 is the mid-range unit and offers many features for the geocacher. It has a built-in map of the contiguous United States, Alaska and Canada. It has an SD card slot for additional map storage. The screen is a 2.7-inch color touch-screen. The Triton is very geocache friendly, accepting .loc or .gpx files directly from geocaching.com by using VantagePoint software included with the receiver. Additional features include a built-in flashlight and voice recorder. There is an audio jack for headphones to listen to digital music, voice or other recordings.

DeLorme Earthmate PN-40

The Earthmate PN-40 hand-held GPS receiver is the high-end device for the paperless geocacher. Simply upload the .loc or .gpx file to the receiver and the waypoint, and you will have all cache information, including difficulty, size, description and recent logs. The 360-degree raster rotation puts the buildings, trees and other images on the left and right just as you look at the map and walk, ride or drive. The receiver supports SDHC high-capacity SD cards up to 32 GB for fast transfer of additional maps from DeLorme.
