Salem is perhaps most famous as the historical site of the notorious Salem Witch Trials, which resulted in the death of several innocent women. The town has a lot to offer enthusiasts of history and architecture, offering examples of buildings from nearly every era of American history. Top Salem attractions include the New England Pirate Museum, Witch Dungeon Museum, Salem Witch Museum and the House of the Seven Gables, which was made famous by the author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Given its position on the water, Salem is also a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy boating and yachting.
