Arctic Ice Hotels

The ice hotels built round the world every winter are truly ephemeral pieces of art. They are built by a group of talented artists and individuals who work hard for the enjoyment of tourists and travelers. All of their hard work is literally dissolved at the end of the winter season. It may sound disheartening, but it only brings the opportunity to build something different and equally magical every year.

Hotel de Glace, Canada

Every year the Hotel de Glace (French for "hotel of ice") is rebuilt. Its season is Jan. 4 to April 4. For 2010, the Hotel de Glace features a Nordic design with rooms and the ice bar all featuring this distinct style. Several packages are available for those looking to book a stay at this unique establishment.

Northern Discovery features a one-night stay in the Hotel de Glace. Upon arrival you will be served a complimentary cocktail from the ice bar. Full equipment for the night is included, which consists of an arctic sleeping bag, blanket and pillow. A full buffet breakfast awaits you in the morning at the Auberge Duchesnay just across the street.

The Polar Getaway includes a one-night stay in a romantically lit room of the Hotel de Glace and a second night at the Auberge Duchesnay. A gift package of chocolates and a bottle of cider are also yours upon your arrival in your room at the Hotel de Glace. You also have a choice of two activities for the interim day. You can choose from tandem massage, dogsledding, or snowmobiling.

Several other packages are also available.

Ice Hotel #20, Sweden

Celebrating its 20th year in the 2009-10 season, the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, is one of the premier ice hotels in the world. The artists who construct the hotel use only the water of the Torne River to design and build the Ice Hotel every year.

For those who wish to stay at the Ice Hotel, there are several cold accommodation rooms built entirely of snow and ice. These include the art suites with sculptures and designs worked into the room's décor, the ice rooms with all pieces of furniture sculpted from ice, and the snow rooms made completely from snow and featuring a special-built bed of snow.

If you are not too keen on sleeping in sub-zero temperatures, the Ice Hotel also features warm accommodations outside of the actual hotel itself. These rooms feature refrigerators, televisions and telephones, and bathrooms with a shower and toilet.

The Ice Hotel also features the Absolut Icebar. The bar is open from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is the perfect place to relax with a cold drink and mingle with other guests. All drinks are offered to be served in the signature ice glasses.

Kirkenes Snow Hotel

The Kirkenes Snow Hotel features rooms and accommodations in a palace made entirely of snow. Rooms are decorated with sculptures and designs. Guests to the Snow Hotel are met at the Rica Kikenes Hotel, which is where large luggage is left. The hotel only allows you to bring overnight bags to the rooms. Guides from the hotel arrive in the evening and take you to the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. Dinner is included in your stay.

The Ice Bar at Kirkenes is just that, a bar made entirely out of ice. Relax with a cold drink and enjoy the surrounding décor. The Restaurant Gabba is just within walking distance of Kirkenes. The restaurant serves fresh salmon, whitefish and many other arctic dishes for the enjoyment of guests.
