On a clear afternoon as the sun starts to set, few places in the Washington, D.C. area are as charming as Old Town, the historic and dog-friendly waterfront section of Alexandria, Virginia. Riverfront restaurants in Alexandria offer a calming respite after a day of hiking around the city or biking the popular 18-mile Mt. Vernon Trail that runs south along the riverside from Alexandria. Sit, relax and enjoy the view.

Chart House Restaurant

Perched right on the Potomac River, the Chart House is a good waterfront Alexandria, Virginia, restaurant for impressing out-of-town guests. Diners should try for a window table so that they will have an especially good view of the U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument not too far in the distance. At night, the lights in the restaurant, as well as the twinkling lights of Washington, make for a romantic and pleasant ambiance. Many diners opt for the prime rib, a specialty of the house, but the restaurant is also known for its seafood dishes, including Snapper Hemingway and Shrimp Fresca. Oysters on the half shell and clam chowder are also tasty treats. Guests should not forget to leave room for the deadly but delicious Hot Chocolate Lava Cake.

Indigo Landing

Guests pull up a chair on the Indigo Landing outdoor deck on a summer evening and enjoy watching the sailboats in the Potomac River. They should know, however, that they are also right next to Reagan National Airport, so the conversation will be interrupted by the roar of the jet planes taking off and landing. However, inside the restaurant, guests can enjoy a dazzling view of the river, the airport and Washington without the noise. The focus is on seafood entrees, such as Thai snapper and Atlantic salmon, and, of course, Chesapeake crab cakes, the local specialty.

Mai Thai

The upper floors of the Mai Thai offer views of the water, even though this restaurant is across a small grassy park area from the river's edge. Guests can have a bowl of Tom Ka Gai and a plate of Pad See Ew and watch the boats cruising up and down the Potomac. True to its name, the Mai Tai drinks are a sweet, delicious and strong concoction. But they do offer other alcoholic drinks, including a Lychee Martini, and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Diners might want to try the Lemon Ginger Iced Tea for a new twist on an old favorite.
