Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, is the political, commercial and cultural center of the country. The city is on the banks of the River Plate between Argentina and Brazil. Its long colonial history starts during the Spanish dominance of Latin America when Montevideo was used as a military fortification to protect the area. Remnants of this history survive in Montevideo's historic district, which still contains many of the city's major colonial attractions.

Buquebus

Buquebus is the ferry operator between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo. The company also provides day tours in Montevideo, and in the nearby historic town of Colonia for tourists from Bueos Aires, which is just across the River Plate from Montevideo and Colonia. The Buquebus day tour includes round-trip ferry service, lunch and a tour of either city. Upon arrival in Montevideo, the tour starts with the Ciudad Vieja, or Old City, which is the historic district of and site of the original Spanish settlement and fortification. The tour continues with lunch at Café del Puerto followed by a three-hour guided tour of the rest of the city. The last stop is at the Punta Carreta shopping center before heading back to the ferry dock.
