With easy access to the Chesapeake Bay and close proximity to Washington, D.C., Alexandria has become one of Virginia's most popular waterfront areas. Old Town is the city's downtown area, rife with boutiques, eateries and galleries housed in historic rowhomes. With so many options, you'll be hard-pressed to find just one spot to indulge in a great cup of hot soup.

The Warehouse

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Alexandria is the Warehouse Bar and Grill. Although it's an upscale restaurant with a full menu of gourmet entrees, they are known for one thing: she-crab soup. This rich soup is a cross between chowder and bisque, and is piled high with chunks of fresh Maryland crab meat. The soup has become a classic at the restaurant, and continues to be one of the most popular menu items.

The Fish Market

Just one and half blocks away from The Warehouse is The Fish Market, a place where seafood reigns and the blue-and-white checkered tableclothes are bound to get messy as crab mallets fly through the air. Crab soup is also on the menu here, as well as clam chowder, seafood stew, and a rotating selection of soup of the day. As popular as soup is here, it's often just the start of a seafood feast for many guests.

La Madeleine

La Madeleine is a staple in the D.C./Maryland area. Crowds line up at lunchtime for the French cafe's stellar soup, for which they have become known. Tomato Basil is their most popular option. The menu also offers French Onion daily, as well as a soup of the day. Enhance your lunch with a crisp salad or a wedge of rich quiche.
