Columbia, South Carolina, is home to 52,000-acre Fort Jackson, an Army training base, and 41-mile Lake Murray, offering boating and fishing, according to the city's visitors' bureau. Other visitor attractions include several golf courses, the 170-acre Riverbanks Zoo & Garden and the West Columbia Riverwalk. Columbia Metropolitan Airport is six miles from downtown Columbia and staying in one of several nearby hotels provides a convenient home base during an extended stay in South Carolina.
