Kodiak Island, Alaska, is in the Gulf of Alaska and is a land of austere beauty, rugged weather and lots of fish. There are several different salmon runs on the island each year, including chum, sockeye, king, silver and pinks. There is a U.S. Coast Guard station on Kodiak, and many commercial fishermen make Kodiak their base of operations. Anglers flying into Kodiak for a vacation have several lodges to choose from for their fishing holiday.

Olga Creek Lodge is located on Olga Bay within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and offers lodging and opportunities to fish for salmon, trout and halibut, as there is fresh- and saltwater access. The lodge, which is accessed via seaplane, features four guest bedrooms, a living room, sitting room and an arctic entry. There are both indoor toilet and outhouse facilities. All guest meals are served in a dining cabin. Olga Creek Lodge has two boats for transporting guests up the rivers and tributaries around the lodge, where they can go for red, silver and king salmon, depending on what time of the year they stay. Guests frequently see Kodiak bears.

Olds River Inn offers guest cabins with two or four beds, a bathroom, and a kitchen that is outfitted with pots, pans and dishes; a microwave and stove; and a small fridge. The inn is on the island's road system, and there are several rivers and creeks that guests can drive to within a few minutes that are prime for trout and salmon. Saltwater fishing charters can also be arranged from the inn. The cabins at the Olds River Inn have both river and ocean access views, so it is possible to have your evening meal on the porch of your cabin while watching humpback whales swimming in the bay and bears walking along the river searching for salmon. Internet and satellite TV keep you connected while you're at the inn. Pets are not allowed.

Zachar Bay Lodge offers salt and fresh water fishing adventures to guests, who can try for five species of salmon (chum, sockeye, king, silver and pink), depending on when they stay. Halibut and other deep-water sport fishing can also be arranged, or guests can fly-fish the streams and rivers near the lodge for trout, Arctic grayling and Dolly Varden. The lodge was formerly an old fish cannery, and guest cabins are old barracks and cannery buildings that now have modern luxuries, such as soft queen beds, satellite TV, showers and flush toilets. Meals are served family style in the dining hall. Wildlife and bird species frequently seen from the lodge include Kodiak bears, humpback whales, puffins, bald eagles and orcas.
