Baker's Keyboard Lounge

Baker's Keyboard Lounge fronts the intersection of Livernois Avenue and Eight Mile Road at the Detroit -- Ferndale border. Palmer Park and the private Detroit Golf Club are two miles south of Baker's via M-1 / Woodward Avenue.

Baker's Keyboard Lounge has been serving guests since 1934 and hails itself as the world's oldest jazz club. Musicians that have performed at the club include Fats Waller, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Liberace. Inside, this establishment is recognized for its piano-themed bar, Italian tile and vintage photographs.

Southern favorites grace the menu. Entrées include chicken wings, gizzards, barbecued ribs, catfish and smothered pork chops. Baker's offers black-eyed peas, collard greens, and yams as side dishes to accompany your meal. Except for Mondays, when it is closed, Baker's treats the lunch and dinner crowd to live music daily. Preferred dress is business casual.

Southern Fires Restaurant

Southern Fires accommodates Detroiters just east of downtown in Detroit's Islandview neighborhood. Islandview is immediately across the Grand Avenue Bridge to Belle Isle Park at the Detroit River.

Southern Fires greets diners with cherry wood furnishings, exposed brick, and neutral colors. This casual restaurant offers beef, seafood, pork and poultry entrees. Smothered steak and rotisserie chicken are crowd favorites. Additionally, catfish and salmon offerings are fried with cornmeal. For dessert, complete your evening with strawberry shortcake or peach cobbler. Southern Fires opens daily for lunch and dinner.

Steve's Soul Food Restaurant

Steve's Soul Food operates two locations in Detroit. Steve's Soul Food Market fronts Grand River Avenue on the West Side, while Steve's Downtown restaurant operates adjacent to the riverfront. Steve's Downtown is associated with The Key Club, which provides live music and open mic poetry to entertain guests. The downtown setting provides more of an upscale ambiance than the Grand River address.

Steve's Soul Food at Grand River serves soul food by the pound. Selections include ox tails, short ribs, candied yams and gumbo. Steve's Downtown menu is notable for its barbecued pig feet, New York strip steak and buttermilk fried catfish. Further, mashed potatoes, fried corn, and mixed vegetables are included with entrées as side dishes. Both restaurant locations are open for lunch and dinner every day. The Key Club accommodates weekend partygoers until the early morning hours, and enforces a business casual dress code.
