Often the Alaskan coast is explored from a cruise ship, but many areas of the vast and wild state are accessible with an RV or other vehicle. Widely scattered RV parks and camping facilities can be found throughout the state, putting visitors close to the wildlife and fishing available at Denali National Park; the water sports and history at Skagway; and the scenery of Matanuska Glacier.

Denali Rainbow Village

One mile from the Denali National Forest entrance, the 67 sites of the Denali Rainbow Village are in a prime location. The mix of pull-through and back-in sites can handle 40-foot long RVs. Some have full hookups (20 to 50 amps) and some have water and electricity only. There is a dump station at the campground. There is free Wi-Fi and free satellite TV. Showers are available for a fee. Gas, ice, groceries and a post office can be found across the street at a small mall. You may book tours at the Denali Park entrance. The most common trips are bus rides through Denali to the mountain. Helicopter rides offer spectacular views.

Skagway Mountain View Park

The Skagway Mountain View Park is a five-minute walk from the historic town of Skagway. Cruise ships stop by in the summer, but you can still get a good taste of what Alaska was like 100 years ago.

The campground has 23 sites--most are pull-through--with full hookups; 17 have water and electric only, and 40 have no hookups. There are also tent camping sites.
Firewood and ice are available, and there is a laundry, a car wash, showers and restrooms on-site. The campground also offers cable-TV and Wi-Fi.

Grand View Cafe and RV Park

The Grand View Cafe and RV Park lives up to its name: From the campground you can see the Matanuska Glacier, which is a short drive away. Sheep Mountain is also nearby.

The campground has 26 sites, 19 of which are pull-through sites that can handle big RVs. The campground has fresh spring water to all sites. A few of the sites are smaller, and the electric hookups range from 20 to 50 amps. All of the sites have full hookups. A dump station is available. There is commercial cable-TV, free Wi-Fi and good cell phone reception.
