Ski Lodges in Russia

Russia is known for long winters, snow and vast expanses of remote tundra. Russia is fortunate to have many mountain ranges, and Europe's tallest mountain, Mt. Elbrus. The resort community of Sochi will host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Skiing in Russia is becoming better known throughout the world. Many skiers now keep the mountain resorts of Russia in their cross-hairs for destination skiing. If a trip to the land of the bear for some skiing is in the future, there are several resorts and lodges from which to choose.

Krasnaya Polyana

Krasnaya Polyana is considered one of the top ski areas and resorts in the country. Vladimir Putin is a fan of the resort and makes frequent forays to the slopes. Krasnaya Polyana is near the Black Sea and will be the resort where many of the alpine skiing events will be held in the 2014 Winter Olympics. There are numerous trails of groomed runs and many opportunities for off-piste skiing. The mountain has one of Russia's premier search and rescue teams patrolling the slopes.

The Radisson Krasnaya Polyana offers rooms with twin or double beds and chalets. There is Wi-Fi, television and valet parking at the Radisson. Rooms have private baths and toilets. Shuttles are available to and from the lifts at the resort. All major credit cards are accepted.

Abzakovo - Абзаково

Abzakovo is in the South Ural Mountains, 60 kilometers (38 miles) from the city of Magnitogorsk. The ski area and resort have 18 kilometers of in-bounds "piste" skiing trails served by five cable cars and one tow bar. Many of Russia's premier winter athletes come here to train each winter. Ski equipment is available to rent.

There are rental cottages available for rent along the ski area base. The Abzakovo Hotel offers private rooms with private bathrooms and showers, twin or double beds and a sauna and fitness center. There are taxi services available from the hotel. A disco, bar and restaurant are within the hotel property.

It is possible to ski all year round at Cheget. The ski area is at Mt. Elbrus, the tallest mountain in Russia, peaking out at over 5,000 meters. The ski area at Cheget is used for national and international ski competitions and can be used as an access point to climb the mountain. There are five lifts serving the mountain.

Be prepared that all rooms in the resort of Cheget are done in "block options." What this means is the rooms are in a suite set-up with a shared bathroom. It is possible to be sharing the suite common areas with strangers. If you intend to ride the railroad from Moscow, remember that there is only one transfer per week. Plan ahead to make sure you do not get stuck in Cheget for an extra week.

The Hotel Cheget has 137 rooms and are done in block style. Rooms have either twin or double beds. There is Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Shuttle services are available to the resort.
