Chestnut Mountain Resort

Chestnut Mountain Resort is the closest ski area to Galena, located just seven miles away. Chestnut Mountain boasts a 475-foot vertical drop with nine lifts, and 19 runs ranging from expert black diamonds to beginner bunny hills. Adult lift tickets cost $45 (as of March 2010) with discounted rates for seniors and children. Chestnut also offers ski rentals and lessons for the beginner skier. Also enjoy great food and spirits at one of the luxurious lodges on the mountain.

Sundown Mountain Resort

Sundown Mountain Resort is located 25 miles from Galena, just across the Iowa border. Sundown Mountain boasts the highest lift in the Midwest with a spectacular view. There are six lifts and 21 runs ranging from expert to beginner. Adult lift tickets cost $39 with discounted rates for seniors and children. Sundown Mountain also offers lessons and rentals for the beginner skiers and two lodges offering food, spirits and a great place to relax.

Snowstar Ski Area

Snowstar Ski Area is located 70 miles from Galena. It is a lower-elevation mountain known more for its terrain park and freestyle terrain than great snow and difficult runs. Snowstar offers 14 runs and three lifts and the Darkstar terrain park, which is one of the biggest and most difficult terrain parks in the Midwest. Adult tickets cost $31with discounted rates for seniors, children and military.

Keyes Peak Ski Area

Keyes Peak Ski Area is located 42 miles from Galena just outside of Florence, Wisconsin. Keyes Peak is a very small winter recreation area offering just three tow ropes with five short runs. There is snow tubing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling available at Keyes Peak for those who don't enjoy skiing. The entire ski area can be rented for a day for parties and group retreats. Keyes Peak is only open weekends and adult tickets cost just $12 with discounted rates for students and children.
