The sports scene in Louisville is not limited to the Kentucky Derby. The baseball bats manufactured in Louisville under the name of "Louisville Slugger" have been used by Major League Baseball players since 1884, and Louisville Slugger Field was named to reflect this history. Outdoor enthusiasts often spend the day at Jefferson Memorial Forest, which offers 35 miles of hiking, biking and horseback trails as well as fishing and camping, before heading to the ballgame. When the day is done and the game is over, many of the nearby restaurants are ready to offer a relaxing meal.

Saffron's Persian Restaurant

When Louisville locals want a taste of something different, they head to Saffron's for authentic Persian cuisine. The restaurant is located four blocks from Louisville Slugger Field, and offers a warm and inviting venue with a hint of Old World elegance. The Louisville Courier-Journal awarded Saffron's four stars for "the way the staff balances warm enthusiasm and professionalism" and "the unfailing reliability with which the kitchen executes the menu of regional Persian dishes."

The meal starts with a Persian sabzi of fresh herbs, radishes, walnuts and cucumbers with house-made pita bread that pairs well with the Saffrontini made from gin infused with saffron oil. Teetotalers can select Persian coffee or ask the waitstaff to demonstrate the fine art of serving tea Persian style.

Main dishes include seafood and lamb specialties as well as kabobs, stews and house specialties. Popular dishes include whole rack of grilled New Zealand lamb (Sheeshleek), stew of chicken, mushrooms, peas and lime juice flavored with saffron and onion (Khoresh Gaarch), and meatballs of ground beef and rice seasoned with tarragon, leek, parsley and onion, stuffed with dates and feta cheese and served in a tomato-turmeric sauce (Koofteh-Tabrizi). Reservations are suggested.
