The greater Baltimore area offers visitors plenty to do both within and just outside the city. Whether you've spent your day on a walking tour of the Inner Harbor or biking the trails through Patapsco Valley State Park, you're bound to work up a fierce appetite. German cuisine, with its tradition of hearty dishes served in generous portions, ensures that no diner leaves the table even remotely unsatisfied.

Blob's Park

This Bavarian style beer garden claims to be the site of the first Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States. The menu combines a taste for traditional German cooking with some intriguing fusion dishes like the wienerschnitzel sandwich and black and tan beer battered onion rings. If Blob's impressive selection of bottled and on-tap beers puts you in the mood for dancing, the restaurant hosts polka, swing, and even Latin ballroom seminars two to three times per month.

Signature dishes include the house schnitzel, a cordon bleu-like fillet of veal stuffed with melted cheese and topped with smoked ham. The menu also includes plenty of seafood, from breaded oysters to Maryland's ubiquitous crab cakes.

Offering homemade sauerkraut, a variety of specialty sausages, and prompt service, Mueller's is an ideal spot for both diners hankering for a quick bite and foodies searching for that hard-to-find sauerbraten marinade. The grocery section also stocks imported wines and candies. Mueller's short hours (the restaurant closes at 5 p.m. most days and 2 p.m. on Sundays) make it best suited as a lunchtime destination.
