The Best Bicycle Night Lights

Not being seen becomes a cyclist's greatest danger after dark. But an array of bike lights and reflective gear allows riders to be seen by cars and other cyclists, and lets them see the road or trail to handle their bikes more safely. If you spend time on your bike after dark, become familiar with bike lighting laws in your city and consider investing in a quality set of lights.

Nite Rider MiNewt.200

Nite Rider's MiNewt.200 offers a powerful headlight in a compact package. The 200 lumen output extends light beyond any legal minimum for nighttime riding. Three modes let you choose between high beam, low beam and daylight flashing. At $199, as of March 2010, the light was designed for riders' vision, not just to be seen by cars or other cyclists. The lithium battery recharges in 4.5 hours, allowing a complete recharge while at work.

Nite Rider CherryBomb

Nite Rider's CherryBomb taillight provides the rear visibility riders need to stay safe at night. Unlike other lights that emit light only from the rear, the CherryBomb design allows light to filter through to the sides of your bike. This increases visibility to cars waiting on side streets and to cross traffic on trails. The CherryBomb comes with both clip-on and bike mounts, giving you the choice to mount it to your seat post, or clip it to a seat wedge or backpack. The CherryBomb retails for $25, as of March 2010.

Planet Bike Spok Light Set

The Planet Bike Spok Light Set comes with two mini-lights, one red and one white, that can mount almost anywhere on your bike. Attach them to your wheel hubs to be seen from the side. Mount them on your helmet for additional visibility. The set is not designed to function as your primary light source, but when combined with a powerful headlight and taillight, will provide extra safety. The set retails for $20, as of March 2010.

Nit Ize Clip-On Marker

Add visibility to your messenger bag with the Nit Ize Clip-On Marker. Retailing for $12.95, as of March 2010, the amber-colored light strip hangs on a plastic clip that mounts to backpack zippers and straps. The Clip-On Marker has a flashing and nonflashing mode and runs on a coin battery for 200 hours.
