The Best Bike Seats

Bicycle seats are a cyclist's main point of contact with his bike, and the quality of a bicycle seat directly influences the quality of a cyclist's ride. A bicycle saddle has to ride the balance between being soft enough to be comfortable, but firm enough to provide support for a high-performance ride. The best bike seats are made with durable, lightweight materials and provide a good blend of stiffness and cushioning.

Ritchey WCS Marathon

For long days on the trail, Ritchey's WCS Marathon bike seat is a solid choice for riders who value comfort. Its wing design dissipates vibration from the saddle stem, and the combination of high-density foam and a carbon content shell provide comfort as well as support. BikeRadar.com said that the Marathon "combines reasonably light weight and superb comfort," adding that "it does a superb job of isolating your behind from the worst of the trail," even after a full day of cycling.

Specialized Romin

Specialized's Romin is built for road cyclists who put performance at a premium but don't want to sacrifice comfort. The Romin used Specialized's Body Geometry (BG) design, with a cutaway channel through the middle of the seat to take pressure off of rider's nerves and allow blood flow through arteries. In a Gear of the Day review on Bicycling.com, Matt Phillips noted the seat's performance-oriented design, mentioning its stiffness as well as the seat's rear lip for leverage when pedaling.

Selle Italia Yutaak Gel Flow

Selle's Italia Yutaak Gel Flow bike seat takes an interesting approach to its seat cover. Unlike most covers, which are comprised of one fabric, the Yutaak Gel Flow consists of a textured Kevlar fabric to keep riders from slipping on a bumpy trail as well as a smooth outer Lorica covering to prevent chafing. In addition, the Yutaak features Vibram rubber inserts to absorb bumps as well. BikeRadar's Russel Burton hailed the Yutaak as a "strong, well made saddle with lots of features," specifically noting its titanium rails and Vibram insert for their ability to deaden trail vibration.
