It make little difference that you plan on being in Lexington, Kentucky on business or vacation as long as you go to at least one of the fine restaurants downtown. Kentuckians know good food, and there's a restaurant there to fit almost any budget. Furthermore, much of the cuisine has been adapted to incorporate bourbon, grits and other aspects of Kentucky life.

Cheapside Bar & Grill

If you're headed downtown for a sporting event, first stop at Cheapside Bar & Grill for a leisurely dinner. There's something on the menu for any taste and the restaurant has an old world charm, with tables and booths almost too close together in the bar and dining room. Start out with an appetizer such as Portobello Fries, which is fried strips of portobello mushroom caps that are dipped in Guinness beer batter and served with a horseradish mayo sauce. Or go with a giant soft pretzel stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese and bits of jalapeno peppers, baked and served with Guinness mustard sauce. Try one of the many entrees including pan roasted whiskey rib eye, a 12 oz. steak, de-glazed with Kentucky bourbon, apple cider and brown mustard, then topped with caramelized onions.

a la lucie

Some people think a la lucie is gaudy, with its leopard prints, red ceiling, and green walls, but others say it's eclectic, with artwork containing female nudes and a picture of Holly Golightly. Start your culinary excursion with an appetizer like steak tartare or sea scallop Benedict with country ham, grits and hollandaise sauce. For an entree, choose the likes of roasted pork tenderloin with apple chutney and sweet potatoes, or pork chops served with corn pudding and topped with a splash of molasses.

deSha's

A restaurant with Victorian charm, deSha's is located in a historic building at Triangle Park in downtown Lexington. This restaurant opened in 1985 and it has been a popular destination almost since Day One. Locals have made its cornbread with whipped butter one of Lexington's favorites, but that's only a start. It makes one of the best hot browns around and its prime rib is special. Other entrees on its menu include Atlantic salmon fillet glazed with brown sugar and Cajun seasonings and topped with raspberry-almond butter, and sauteed jumbo shrimp with fresh vegetables, tossed in a light pesto cream sauce and served on linguine.
