Fort Mitchell, Ky., is located between Interstate 71 and the Ohio River, just south of the Embshoff Woods and Nature Preserve in Cincinnati. It is about about 15 miles south of Mount Airy Forest and about 20 miles west of East Fork Wilderness Area and State Park.

The 330-acre Embshoff Woods and Nature Preserve is a part of the Hamilton County Park District. It has more than 35 miles of trails for hiking, in-line skating and biking, including the four-mile-long Mitchell Memorial Forest Mountain Bike Trail. Mount Airy Forest is the largest city park in Cincinnati. In addition to its several ponds, it has several miles of wooded hiking trails. It is also the home of the cave salamander, which is on Ohio's state endangered species list.

The East Fork Wilderness Area and East Fork State Park comprises more than 3,000 combined acreage, including more than 80 miles of hiking trails and the 32-mile Steven Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail. It also has 55 miles of bridle trails, 46 miles of backpacking trails and eight miles of mountain biking trails.
