COLONIAL HOUSE image by brelsbil from Fotolia.com

Oxford, Connecticut, is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It boasts more than 3,000 acres of open space, a lakefront beach, a public boat launch, an Olympic-sized pool and plenty of biking and hiking trails. Before partaking in any of the town's recreational activities, make sure you are well-fed and try one of the local restaurants.

The Oxford House

The historic Oxford House was built in 1795 and sits across from Victory Memorial Park, where military exercises were carried out during the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods. The sprawling, Georgian-style building once served as an inn, and the restaurant takes advantage of the space, with several of the ground-level rooms serving as dining spaces. The interior is done in true Colonial style, with printed wallpaper, rustic beams, blue accents and dark wood tones.

The thoughtfully prepared menu offers a variety of appetizers, soups and main dishes. All entrees come with fresh, house-made bread and a garden salad. Popular dishes include gnocchi with shrimp and broccoli, roast duckling flambé, prime rib and veal Grand Marnier. Brunch is served on Sundays. Reservations are recommended.

The Brookside Inn Restaurant

The Morgatto family has owned and operated the Brookside Inn since 1954. It enjoys a prime location in town just a few hundred feet from Swan Lake and with a forested hillside in its backyard. The interior is warm and comfortable, with paneled walls, wood floors and marble-topped tables. A full-service bar caters to a lively crowd on the weekends. The extensive wine list complements the dishes, and many of the wines are available by the glass.

The Italian-inspired menu offers an assortment of appetizers, soups and main dishes that come with a house salad. Customer favorites include clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and calamari over linguine with a garlic and white wine sauce; chicken sautéed with sausage, mushrooms, potatoes, garlic and vinegar peppers with a rosemary-white wine sauce; and grilled New York strip with sautéed mushrooms. Reservations are recommended.
