Approximately 150 miles east of Atlanta, Augusta, Ga., is the second largest city in the state and is often referred to as the "Garden City of the South" in homage to its many beautiful outdoor spaces. There's much to do outside in Augusta. Visitors can start with a walk along the two-tiered park that fronts the Savannah River at the center of downtown. The river and a host of lakes make Augusta the perfect city for numerous water activities to include swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. A number of historic hotels also are in the area to accommodate travelers.

The Partridge Inn

First built in 1836 as a private residence, the historic Partridge Inn was converted to a lavish hotel around the turn of the century, with developers eventually adding more than 60 rooms. After the Great Depression, the inn languished in various states of disrepair, first abandoned, then reinvented as an apartment complex and, finally, serving as a flophouse. In the late 1980s, this Augusta landmark was lovingly restored to its former grandeur. Today, the inn has 144 rooms, suites and studios available to accommodate guests and serves as a tranquil hilltop retreat just a few miles from the city's center.

Queen Anne Inn

This quaint Victorian hotel is located just a few blocks from the Riverwalk in the historic Old Towne district of Augusta. Originally constructed as a private residence, the 11-bedroom bed-and-breakfast still retains much of its original architecture. Some of the rooms have private baths with whirlpool tubs, and others share a hall bath. Guests can enjoy a continental breakfast each morning on the upstairs porch or walk over to the nearby Whistletop Café for a hot breakfast compliments of the innkeepers. In-room spa services can be booked in advance.
