Kayak off of Belle Isle or Peche Island or out to the base of the Ambassador Bridge while you are in Detroit. If you would prefer hiking, explore large parks such as the areas near Lake St. Clair and Graham Lakes. Detroit is also the home of the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers professional sports teams and a number of unique shops, galleries and museums. After long days of taking in the area, have a meal at one of a number of Mexican food restaurants that cater to the large Mexican population of the area.

Mi Pueblo Restaurant

When you visit Mexico, you get accustomed to colorful drinks, mariachi music, colorful furnishings and authentic dishes in the restaurants that you dine at. All of those features come to life right in the middle of Detroit at Mi Pueblo Restaurant. Enjoy standard-issue meals that feature tacos, enchiladas, nachos and a number of steak and seafood choices at Mi Pueblo or test your taste buds with something more interesting that includes items such as pig stomach, beef head and beef tongue. Complement with your meal with a selection from a long list of exotic drinks from a full bar. Mojitos, margaritas, coladas and daiquiris occupy a drink menu that also includes a number of house-specialty drinks that you won't find anywhere else such as the Lava Colada, which infuses two types of premium rum with a special secret-recipe colada mix and a strawberry drizzle.

Taqueraea Lupitas

Taqueraea Lupitas is a home away from home for immigrants looking to experience a taste of their culture. The decor of the restaurant offers shrines to the Virgin of Guadalupe and classic velvet matador pictures, while a live band sings only in Spanish. No alcohol is served at the restaurant, but a number of other drinks such as sweet rice-based horchata are made on site and served fresh. Popular dishes include pozole, which is a soup that combines pork and hominy or a shrimp and octopus cocktail in a hot sauce. Street cart-style tacos are also very popular.

Mexican Town Restaurant

Located in the Mexican Town area of Detroit, this authentic restaurant is a favorite for locals and tourists. Its website reveals that it is known for its Flaming Fajitas, which combines marinated slices of skirt steak with slices of tomato, onion and green pepper served on a hot, sizzling plate with handmade tamales. A number of other meals featuring fresh seafood, steak, chicken and fresh vegetables are also featured. Roaming musicians play Spanish music on the weekends, and the vibe of this restaurant is casual yet fast-paced. Look for its huge building, massive signs and color awnings to know that you are in the right place.
