Parks in Newcastle, Washington

Incorporated in 1994, Newcastle, Washington, is a relatively new city near Bellevue and Lake Washington. The Golf Club at Newcastle features 36 holes on 350 acres of grounds with views of Mt. Rainier. Newcastle's 10,000 residents have access to 40 acres of park land within the city limits, according to the city's website. Beyond Newcastle, the Cascade Mountains are an hour's drive to the east and provide skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.

Lake Boren Park

Lake Boren Park features 22 acres of play areas and walking paths and is the city's "premier community park," according to Newcastle's parks website. Athletic facilities at Lake Boren Park include two tennis courts, a basketball court and a sand volleyball court. Children may enjoy the large play structure or fishing from the dock with a parent. In the summer, bring a lawn chair for Concerts in the Park to hear live music in the great outdoors. Picnic shelters may be reserved in advance and picnic tables and barbecues are open to everyone. A circular trail through the park is ideal for bicycling or jogging any time of year. Lake Boren Park is located just off Coal Creek Parkway, Newcastle's main thoroughfare.

Hazelwood Park

For a natural, woodsy experience, 7.3-acre Hazelwood Park features a boardwalk for traversing wetlands. To the west, Seattle and Mercer Island are visible through the trees. Available parking at Hazelwood Park is limited to three cars. The main entrance to the park is located at the end of 121st Place SE St.

Donegal Park

Donegal Park is a neighborhood park located in the Hazelwood community and features 2.1 acres with two children's play areas, picnic tables and a walking path. A covered gazebo provides shelter from the summer sun or from frequent Washington rain.

Highlands Park

The Highlands at Newcastle is a residential subdivision featuring 1.5-acre Highlands Park within its borders. A swing set is available for children and picnic tables for a snack. A well-lit paved walking path provides residents and visitors a place to stroll or exercise and a basketball court is available for practice shooting hoops. Highlands Park also features a barbecue area for those needing a larger venue to grill, although parking is limited to four spaces.

China Creek Park

China Creek is a 5.5-acre neighborhood park located in a housing development of the same name. The majority of the park features a rough trail through open space and a small portion has a children's play area and picnic tables.
