Glacier National Park is located in northern Montana, bordering the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. It covers a land mass of 1,584 square miles and has two distinct mountain ranges, 300 lakes and over 1,100 species of indigenous plants. According to the National Parks Service, the area drew almost 2 million visitors in 2006 and features an array of activities such as hiking, fishing, camping and rock climbing in warmer months and skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. In addition, there are numerous cabin accommodations in Glacier that are ideal for outdoor aficionados looking to be closer to nature.

Glacier Trailhead Cabins

This cluster of rustic, rural cabins is located just outside Glacier National Park approximately 2 miles north of St. Mary, Montana, and features spectacular mountain views and a babbling brook nearby. Established in 1999, these cabins are open to everything from group fishing expeditions to business retreats to family vacations. Numerous shopping and dining options can be found throughout the local Babb-St. Mary Valley and a friendly, knowledgeable staff is readily available to answer your questions. The property has a common area with fire pit, firewood, grills and picnic tables as well as vending machines and complimentary coffee each morning. All cabins are 100 percent nonsmoking and one is handicap-accessible. Cabin interiors include your choice of one or two queen beds plus table with chairs and a private bathroom. The picnic shelter has a full kitchen. Cookware, dishware and utensils are provided. The cabins do not have any telephones or televisions, although an emergency phone is located in the main office. In addition, the property does not allow pets.

East Glacier Motel & Cabins

In addition to a small six-room motel, this property features 11 cozy cabins that are conveniently situated near the Glacier Park Lodge and Golf Course, as well as numerous activities like swimming, horseback riding, bicycling and boating. Several grocery stores, restaurants, gift shops and a laundromat are all within walking distance, while the local Amtrak station is only a half mile away and offers pickup service. The cabins are clean and spacious, offering numerous bedding combinations with doubles, queens and kings available. Rollaway beds can also be rented for a small additional fee. Other features include showers with hot running water and kitchenettes with hot plates, small refrigerators and microwaves. The cabins offer different rates for spring and summer lodging, and you can check availability or book online.

Smoky Bear Ranch

The beautiful, well-maintained cabins of Smoky Bear Ranch are nestled in the unspoiled North Fork Valley along the western edge of the Rocky Mountains. The cabins provide convenient access to all park activities, from trout fishing to whitewater rafting to snowmobiling in the canyon and McGinnis Creek areas. The property has a fire pit, picnic tables and a lodge with a gift shop selling items like huckleberry jam and wood sculpture wall hangings. Quilting retreats are also available. You can choose between two types of cabins: a large four bedroom/two bath cabin that sleeps 12 comfortably or smaller one bedroom/one bath cabins that sleep up to 6. The larger cabin features a television, washer and dryer and a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher and dining table while the smaller cabins have kitchenettes with two-burner stoves, mini fridges and toasters. All cabins have coffee makers, microwaves, cookware, dishware and utensils as well as bed linens and towels. Gift certificates are available on the website.
