One hundred and eighteen people live in Black Hawk, Colorado, 35 miles west of Denver, but the town has more casinos than Atlantic City. Black Hawk was an old mining town built on the fork of Clear Creek and Gregory Gulch where gold was discovered in May 1859. The town is part of the Central City/Black Hawk National Historic District and the introduction of gambling in 1991 funded the restoration of many old buildings. Casinos vie with Rocky Mountain outdoor activities for visitors' attention.

Isle of Capri Hotel and Casino

The Isle of Capri has a nightclub, a casino, restaurants, a bar, a coffee shop and Internet service. Some rooms have mountain views and all have video game consoles. Most of the action here is around the gaming tables, but outdoor enthusiasts can find seasonal cross-country skiing, fishing, kayaking, nature photography and gold panning. Room rates start at $60 (as of 2010); you have to be at least 21 to check in.

The hotel's 536 luxury rooms include 64 suites, panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and a full range of deluxe amenities. There's a spa with sauna, steam rooms and hot tubs, a rooftop pool with a movable glass wall for winterizing and several dining and snacking options, including the town's only Starbucks. Lady Luck Casino and Hotel

Lady Luck Casino and Hotel, formerly the Colorado Central Station Casino Hotel, evokes the glory days of the railroad and the Gold Rush. The 164 guest rooms have train lights on the cherry-wood headboards, cable TV and refrigerators. The hotel has a casino---slot machines, blackjack and poker---several restaurants, a nightclub and even ski storage. It was recently purchased by Isle of Capri and a covered walkway was built between the two facilities so guests of either hotel can use both casinos without winter exposure. King rooms begin at $59 per night (as of March 2010).
