Coleman lanterns have been illuminating campsites, outdoor work areas, and even homes since the early 20th century. This flagship product of The Coleman Co. Inc. has allowed the product line to progress into stoves, tents and other outdoor equipment. The 200A models are one-mantle gas lanterns known for long life, simple maintenance and easy repairs. Servicing of the lantern is enhanced by the continued availability of many parts directly from Coleman. Many components of the lantern may be replaced as units or individual components of the assemblies may be replaced, reducing the already minimal repair costs.

Fount

The base of the lantern, called the fount (Part No. 200A1651), holds the fuel for the lantern. Serviceable components of the fount include the plunger, fuel cap and base rest. The plunger (Part No. 242D5201) pressurizes the fuel inside the reservoir. If the plunger is stiff, a drop of oil is generally all that is required. If repairs are needed, the plunger disassembles into several pieces or the entire plunger may be ordered and replaced. The fuel cap (Part No. 200C1401) will need to be replaced if lost since the reservoir cannot be pressurized without it. The base rest (Part No. 200A4891) protects the fuel valve between the fount and the frame.

Fuel Valve

The fuel valve (Part No. 200-6571) carries the fuel from the reservoir into the frame and burner. The centerpiece of the fuel valve is an eccentric block (Part No. 242-3041). Attached to the eccentric block are the fuel and air wire (Part No. 200-1481), tip cleaner stem (Part No. 202-3531), and valve stem assembly (Part No. 200-6531).

Generator

The heart of the Coleman lantern is the generator (Part No. 200A5891), which transforms the fuel from a liquid state to a gaseous state. The generator is typically replaced as a unit if needed and contains a needle (Part No. 242-238) and gas tip (Part No.242-2181). A jamb nut (Part No. 605-210) at the top of the generator secures the part in place.

Frame and Burner

Connected to the fuel valve inside the globe of the lantern is the frame and burner (Part No. 20-3701). This hardware carries the fuel to the mantle where light is produced as the fuel is burned. Individual components of the frame and burner include the burner cap and screen (Part No. 242-3231), burner tube (Part No. 200-3241), lock nut (Part No. 200-4561), burner frame assembly (Part No. 200A6621), "U" tube and venturi (Part No. 200A3261), ventilator bracket (Part No. 200-6631), and ball nut (Part No. 203-441).

Globe, Ventilator and Mantle

The glass shield surrounding the mantle is called the globe. The stock globe for the Coleman 200A series of lanterns is a clear, Pyrex globe (Part No. 690A051) but an amber globe (Part No. 690-066) is also available by order. The mantle produces the light and extra mantles are carried by the prepared camper. Mantles (Part No. 21A102) are inexpensive and are identical among a wide variety of Coleman lanterns. The ventilator is the top covering of the Coleman lantern and is secured by a nut. The ventilator and globe will become hot during operation and should be allowed to cool before servicing the lantern.
