Detroit, often stereotyped as a gritty, industrial place, may not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of outdoor activities. Which is a shame, since the presence of the 983-acre Belle Isle Park, the numerous lakes and rivers for canoeing and fishing, and the ski resorts just outside of town, all attest to the fact that Detroit is not all warehouses and alleyways. For outdoor enthusiasts in Detroit looking for a healthy bite to eat, in a restaurant that celebrates active and fit lifestyles, options abound.

Golden Gate Cafe

The Golden Gate Cafe's is more than just a vegetarian restaurant. It is also an active meeting place in which people gather to discuss and organize around political and social issues. It also has live music regularly, as well as art exhibits, and on-site chiropractic services.

Regarding the menu, appetizers include Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, such as grape leaves, hummus and pita bread. Fresh salads with homemade dressings are available, as are miso soup, vegetarian wrap sandwiches, stir-fries, and freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices. The Golden Gate Cafe also serves wheatgrass juice shots.

Inn Season Cafe

The Inn Season Cafe is well-known in the Detroit area as a mainstay vegetarian eatery with almost 30 years of history. The eco-minded as well as the health conscious will be delighted to know that all of the dishes prepared at the Inn Season Cafe use seasonal, organic produce from local farmers.

The menu covers a range of dishes, from a variety of stir-fries to vegetarian Mexican burritos and enchiladas. Eight different types of fresh salad also are offered, along with many different types of personalized and gourmet pizza items, such as "the Mediterranean," "the bistro" and "the portabella walnut."

Mei Ling

Mei Ling serves Chinese vegetarian food, but what it is specifically known for are its "mock-meat" dishes, making this a great choice for outdoor enthusiast group outings in which non-vegetarians also are present. Traditional appetizers such as dumplings, scallion pancakes and hot-and-sour soup are available, but the real draw for most patrons is often the faux chicken, beef, ham and shrimp dishes.

Frugal diners will also be happy to learn that most entrees at Mei Ling are under $12, as of March 2010.
