The town is named for a 60-foot rock that sits balanced atop another much smaller rock at the peak of a small hill. The town is home to fewer than 100 people, but due to the superlative scenery of the area, including the Valley of the Gods and Goosenecks State Park, visitors have the choice between several local hotels.

The View Hotel

The View Hotel is unique in that it is owned by Navajo Indians, and is located within the Navajo Tribal Park at Monument Valley. One of the goals in creating the hotel was to blend in with Monument Valley's natural beauty and not to distract from it with over-development. Ninety-five rooms are available on three floors, featuring flat screen televisions, a coffee maker with organic coffee and tea included, a small refrigerator, and a microwave. Some rooms are outfitted to provide views of the stars of Monument Valley. Wireless Internet is available in the lobby. A fitness center and conference room sit on the ground floor. The entire hotel is decorated using traditional Navajo designs.
