Bike lovers will find a few trails to choose from when pedaling through the Okemos, Michigan, area. A short drive from East Lansing, riders will find terrain suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids, road bikes and casual cruisers. Additionally, trails in the area are beginner-friendly because of uncongested, well-marked streets.

Burchfield Park

The Burchfield Park is 28 minutes from Okemos. Off-road junkies will find an eight-mile loop to practice their skills on. Elevation gain is minimal, and most riders can complete the ride with a moderate amount of aerobic capacity. What makes this trail worthwhile, however, is its moderate to difficult technical obstacles. Though the trail only takes 30 to 40 minutes to complete, mountain bike riders can expect to encounter hairpin turns, rock formations, abrupt drops and switch-back climbs. For those who are less adept, the trail offers an easier route around the most difficult of obstacles. Additionally, the park offers a much tamer 5.9 mile trail.

East Lansing Cruise

This ride begins at Michigan State University--nine minutes from Okemos. The East Lansing Cruise is a 41.3-mile loop that follows well-maintained streets. Though not particularly technically demanding, riders should have an intermediate level of fitness due to the length of the ride. The route winds through flat and occasionally hilly terrain with a low elevation gain. Riders can expect to pass through largely agricultural areas with numerous farms, research centers and a couple of small towns along the way.

Grand Ledge Ramble

Fitzgerald Park is 30 minutes from Okemos. The park is the starting point for the 21.5-mile Grand Ledge Ramble. Riders on road bikes will discover that this trail is a loop with minimal elevation gain. The ramble is an easy ride across flats and over the occasional hill and requires no special technical ability. Riders with a basic level of fitness can complete this ride. The route takes riders through quiet rural areas that include farms, mills and the occasional market. The beginning of the trail runs between the Grand River and the Grand Ledges--an appropriate spot for a post-ride picnic.
