Baltimore will admit that it is not a city known for its Mexican restaurants. The home of Old Bay Seasoning is more of a seafood town. Its Fell's Point waterfront area is loaded with restaurants with oysters on the half shell and variations of dishes featuring delectable blue crabs, found in the nearby Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore is also known for the many fine restaurants in Little Italy. However, if you've got a hankering for a quesadilla washed down with a margarita, you do have some options for delicious Mexican food in Baltimore.

El Guapito

El Guapito opened in July 2008 to help meet the demand for authentic Mexican food in Baltimore. The menu, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner items, offers traditional dishes, as well as more unusual combinations, such a chorizo burrito and a beef tongue taco. Flan and Tres Leches cake are among the homemade dessert offerings. Don't forget to have a Dos Equis beer or a glass of Sangria with your meal.

Nacho Mama's

For a funky hole in the wall, you can't beat this tiny Mexican "hang out," as its awning proclaims. It is pure Baltimore fun. A lifesize statue of Elvis Presley stands watch by the door. Walls are covered with Baltimore memorabilia from local sports teams, including the the Orioles, and Baltimore-brewed National Bohemian beer, better known as "Natty Boh." Big burritos and sizzling fajitas are favorites on the menu, but you can also find non-Mexican dishes under "Mama's Favorites." They include "N'awlins shrimp" and baby back ribs. Staying true to its Baltimore roots but with a nod to its Mexican menu, Mama's also offers a creamy, jalapeno-filled crab dip. Be sure to order a margarita, which will be served to you in a hubcap.

Arcos Authentic Mexican Bar and Restaurant

Owner Nicolas "Nico" Ramos opened Arcos Restaurant in 2004 because he wanted to bring a little bit of his native Mexico to Baltimore. One of the highlights of the restaurant is the courtyard that twinkles with candles at night, illuminating walls covered with framed photos of Mexican citizens, a painted tile mosaic and wood figures. Carved chairs and tables can be found inside underneath beautiful stained glass windows. One of the best dishes is the barbarcoa, made with lamb, beef or pork, marinated and slow-cooked with special spices. Fish lovers might want to try the Pescado Sarandeado, a whole fresh fish seasoned with garlic and Old Bay.
