Hurricane Ike destroyed much of Galveston Island, including the city-operated Dellanera RV Park. Other RV campgrounds, however, are open for business. While in Galveston, visit Moody Gardens for recreational activities and to see natural history exhibits. Grand buildings include Ashton Villa, Grand 1894 Opera House and romanesque Moody Mansion. Boat enthusiasts may enjoy The Colonel paddlewheeler, the Galveston ferry and the antique iron-hulled tall ship Elissa. Several natural areas in the Galveston area make easy day trips.

Although damaged, Galveston Island State Park reopened in July 2009 for day and overnight use. When fully operational, 150 beach-side or bay-side campsites sit on 2,000 acres with 30- to 50-amp service and showers. Hurricane-damaged campsites are being re-established. From the campground, go swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, boating, and birding.

Almost gulfside, the 53 pull-through campsites at Jamaica Beach RV Park have 30- to 50-amp service, cable TV and Internet, laundry, a playground, hot tub, and pool with children's area. Tent spaces are available. Hiking trails and a jogging track join beachcombing, fishing and boating to occupy visitors. Unusual for campgrounds, a daily newspaper and continental breakfast are included in space rent. The campground opened in 2008.
