While fish and chips began and remain a common, inexpensive British meal for the masses, it has also found a home in popular American cuisine. Popularized by the Arthur Treacher's and Long John Silver fast food restaurant chains, you can find fish and chips restaurants in every major urban area including Detroit. Detroit's access to the Great Lakes has made it a natural choice for fish and chips restaurants.

Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips

Scotty's has been serving fish and chips meals to Detroit residents since 1950. As its name suggests, the main offering on the menu is fish and chips. Along with the standard meal, you can also order a fish-only meal or a combo plate that mixes fish and chips with shrimp, perch, smelt or even frogs' legs.

Scotty's also has an extensive side order menu that include such classic fish and chip additions as cole slaw, clam chowder and onion rings. Additionally, for those who want something other than fish, Scotty's has chicken and chips, hamburger and chips, or a steak and chips option.

Scotty's doesn't serve alcohol, but does provide chilled beverages, including the traditional fish and chip mainstays of orange soda and ginger beer. Scotty's is closed on Mondays, but open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Sundays.

Hope's Fish and Chips

Hope's offers fish and chips in the more traditional British style, with malt vinegar for your chips rather than ketchup, although ketchup is available as well. All meals come with your choice of chips or baked potato, tartar sauce, a side order of cole slaw and a basket of rolls.

The menu also includes several non-fish choices such as shrimp and chips, crab cakes and chips, or chicken and chips. Hope's is open for lunch and dinner. You can eat in as well as take out.
