With the border of Mexico only about a six-hour drive away, it's no surprise that many fine Mexican restaurants can be found in downtown Houston. Whether you're in search of tamales, tacos or tequila, choices abound. After a day exploring the city, pull up a seat at one of these establishments, which offer a wide variety of traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex foods.

Cabo

With a menu boasting "Mix-Mex" grill, Cabo offers dishes featuring Yucatan and Southwestern spices. Fajitas, sandwiches and tacos are all offered with grilled shrimp, beef or chicken. Cabo "favorite" dishes include grilled mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna. Kids meal offerings include chicken fingers and cheese quesadillas.

Guadalajara Del Centro

An upscale Mexican restaurant, Guadalajara Del Centro offers an extensive menu featuring atypical Mexican cuisine, including dishes with chilean sea bass, tilapia and salmon. It is known for its enchilada marisco, a seafood enchilada topped with lump crab meat and an avocado cream sauce. One of its most popular dishes is fried green tamales. While most Mexican restaurants are known for their margaritas, the mojitos are the drink to try here.

Ninfa's

Great food and great service is what your friends will likely say after you take them to Ninfa's on Navigation. This "Original Ninfa's"--others have opened throughout the state--is an unparalleled classic Mexican restaurant in downtown Houston. "Mama" Ninfa Laurenzo started the restaurant in 1973, taking traditional Mexican food and turning it into creative Tex-Mex dishes, including her now-famous skirt steak fajitas. The menu offers fresh Gulf of Mexico seafood, including red snapper and jumbo shrimp. On a balmy night, it's especially nice to sit on the outdoor deck and enjoy a Ninfarita (margarita).
