Poway, California, is a midsized bedroom community of San Diego. Poway has a system of parks that have several hiking trails. Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are within 45 minutes of Poway. Sea-kayaking, surfing, fishing and swimming are 30 minutes from Poway at the beaches of San Diego. There are several campgrounds and RV parks in the greater Poway area.

San Elijo State Beach

The San Elijo State Beach has campsites for tent and RV travelers and is approximately 30 minutes west of Poway.Tent sites are primitive. There are picnic tables, fire rings and fresh-water spigots at the sites. RV sites can handle rigs to 35 feet in length, and the park offers dump stations but no hookups. Pets are allowed in the campground if leashed. No glass containers or bottles are permitted on the beach. Showers and toilets are on the premises. Surfing, fishing, boogie-boarding, swimming and beachcombing are available from the campground. Hiking trails can be found at the Torrey Pines State Reserve, a 20 minute drive down the coast. South Carlsbad State Beach is about a 30-minute drive from Poway, traffic depending. The park has sites for tent campers and RV travelers. RV sites can accommodate rigs to 35 feet in length, and park offers dump stations but no hookups. Tent sites are primitive. There are fresh-water taps on the premises for drinking and cooking water. Pets are allowed in the campground but must be leashed and cannot be left unattended or in parked cars. No glass bottles or containers are allowed on the beach. Showers and toilets are available. Visitors seeking the familiarity of a franchise campground can find it at the San Diego Metro KOA. There are sites for tent campers as well as RVs. Tent sites have fire rings, grills and picnic tables. RV sites have water, sewer and electric hookups. There is a guest house with a kitchen facility, a laundry room and swimming pool. Showers and bathrooms are on the premises for guest comfort. Pets are allowed. AAA and Good Sam discounts are available. The San Diego Zoo and Sea World are within 30 minutes of the KOA. Hiking trails can be found in Torrey Pines State Reserve.
